Lord Merlin and the Lady of the Lake is a follow-up to the hugely popular Rise of Merlin, with ‘Book of Dead’ style expanding symbols, and a few neat additions to change gameplay up a little, whilst making it much more engaging and entertaining for players.
It operates across 10 win lines, which you can bet from 0.01 to 5.00 per line on (10p up to £50.00 per spin). The max win per spin is 10,000x your stake.
The theme is Arthurian legend and based on the Lady of the Lake Enchantress from the Matter of Britain series. The game itself is richly graphical, yet with a traditional feel players of games such as Book of Dead won’t be unfamiliar. Play N Go have expanded on the ‘expanding symbol’ feature, adding Excalibur Spins to add to your existing Free Spins.
My experience of the game
I played Lord Merlin and the Lady of the Lake on my youtube stream, spinning 1200+ spins at 40p stake to grind out 6 Bonus Features, with varying success.
I found the game itself to be very engaging, but found myself looking always for the bonus feature to gain any substantial wins. Base Game hits were mostly 0.5x and 1x, with a small number of larger wins from 3x-10x. Without the Bonus Feature, my gameplay would have been quite expensive.
You can see from my video below, I didn’t even have any big Base Game wins to report. They stayed small, with a simple couple of premiums netting 40p each time being my most frequent win. The game itself has huge potential though, and it’s very easy to see from the bonus just how it could produce a monster win, if it so decided. The bonus feature is very engaging, holding excitement throughout, and you’re aware just how much a single drop of premiums across a few reels could swing your balance upwards.
This is a game I’ll play again, definitely. As this game becomes more widely played, we’re going to see some of the huge hits it potentially has. I’d like to see more Base Game wins, but on volatile games, that’s not always going to happen.
In my video, my balance held up quite well, apart from the 500+ spins it took to gain my 2nd bonus. Before and after that, it played very much like another favourite of mine, Book of Dead. It continually tossed in small wins, reducing the hit on my balance as I awaited a bonus.
The bonus feature teased, but not too often. Nothing worse than one which teases 20 times every 100 spins, but the balance seemed right on Lord Merlin. You got the feeling, anytime there was a tease, that it could drop the bonus in.
Conclusion
Play N Go have Lord Merlin and the Lady of the Lake pretty-much perfect. Players are continually engaged, the game isn’t rinsing you like some do, and you’re continually feeling that your bonus or big win could come on any spin.
Teasing for a bonus is a tricky balance to achieve. Players like to see a tease, but if a game teases too often, the player loses the anticipation of a bonus that tease is designed to bring. Lord Merlin has it about right. You believe, with every tease, that you could be about to hit a bonus.
The Excalibur Spins addition to a well-known Expanding Symbols bonus makes for great entertainment. It slows the bonus down, but gives you anticipation of big win potential, which is why we all seek a bonus in the first place. Many such games let themselves down with their bonus feature, and it’s a disappointment, but not Lord Merlin. The player is engaged from the first spin, and the Excalibur Spins extend that to make for a very interesting bonus.
I’ve not played Lord Merlin on a range of stakes yet, but that will probably be my next ‘grind’ video on this online slot. I’d like to see how it performs on a range of stakes, and just how much that bonus feature could pay. In the meantime, I’ve no hesitation in recommending it as a game to include on your list of games to try out. Play N Go have nailed the balance between gambling and entertainment with this game. It ticks every box, so if you gamble responsibly, you can’t fail to enjoy your time on it.
Paytable & Information
Game Rules
Lord Merlin and The Lady of The Lake is a 5-reel, 3-row video slot game with 10 paylines.
3 or more SCATTER symbols trigger the FREE SPINS mode with an initial 8 spins. A random ROYAL symbol or HIGH-PAYING symbol will be chosen on each spin to become a special EXPANDING SYMBOL!
The chosen EXPANDING SYMBOL can form winning combinations across non-adjacent reels. If the High-Paying Symbol is selected as a special EXPANDING SYMBOL at least 2 of that symbol lands on the reels, that symbol will expand, and if Royal Symbol is selected as a special EXPANDING SYMBOL at least 3 of that symbol lands on the reels, that symbol will expand.
During the FREE SPINS, the SCATTER symbol will change into the WILD SCATTER symbol. The WILD SCATTER acts like a WILD symbol, and substitutes for all symbols.
In FREE SPINS, 2 or more WILD SCATTERS trigger the EXCALIBUR SPINS. Each WILD SCATTER symbol awards +1 EXCALIBUR SPIN. The chosen special EXPANDING SYMBOL locks in and can expand on all EXCALIBUR SPINS. 2 or more WILD SCATTERS re-triggers the feature.
You can attempt to multiply your prize in the optional Gamble round. Press the GAMBLE button after winning a prize to start the round. Your objective is to correctly guess the colour or suit of a face-down card. Take your guess by clicking the appropriate button. If you correctly predict the colour, you double your prize. If you correctly predict the suit, you quadruple your prize. You can play the Gamble round up to five times in succession and up to a limit of 2500 coins.
In the SETTINGS window, you can specify the number of lines you wish to activate per round, the number of coins you wish to bet per active line, and the coin denomination used. To start the round, click SPIN. When the reels stop, the symbols displayed determine your prize according to the paytable.
When 4 premiums arrive in the Bonus Rounds, it can certainly rack up a few pounds. 100x for 4 of these, shows the potential.
